PETITION FOR RELEASE OF BLOGGERS KAREEM AMER AND ABDUL-MONEIM MAHMUD

Six months after the arrest of Kareem Amer, Reporters Without Borders has started a petition calling for the blogger's release and that of his colleague Abdul-Moneim Mahmud.

Internet-users are being asked to sign online, in which the worldwide press freedom organisation calls on the Internet Governance Forum (IGF), a conference organised under the UN mantle, to block Egypt from hosting the event in 2008 unless the two bloggers are freed.

Text of the petition:

"We call for the release of Abdel Kareem Nabil Suleiman (Kareem Amer) and of Abdul-Moneim Mahmud, who have been imprisoned for expressing their opinion online. We urge the organisers of the Internet Governance Forum to intervene with the Egyptian authorities on behalf of these two bloggers. It would be intolerable for a UN summit on the future of the Internet to be held in a country which imprisons bloggers".

The petition will be sent, on 6 November 2007, exactly one year after the arrest of Kareem Amer, to Egyptian President, Hosni Mubarak, to Executive Coordinator of the IGF, Markus Kumar, as well as to the UN Secretary General, Ban Ki-moon.

"Kareem Amer"
Adel Kareem Nabil Suleiman, better known by the pen name Kareem Amer, was arrested on 6 November 2006, for articles published on his blog (

www.karam903.blogspot.com). He frequently attacked the authoritarian excesses of the government of Hosni Mubarak and criticised the country's top religious authorities, particularly the Sunni University Al-Azhar, where he was studying law. The blogger was sentenced on 22 February 2007, to three years in prison for "inciting hatred of Islam" and one year for "insulting" the Egyptian president. The sentence was upheld on appeal on 12 March.

Abdul-Moneim Mahmud
Abdul-Moneim Mahmud, who runs the blog Ana Ikhwan (www.ana-ikhwan.blogspot.com), was arrested on 14 April 2007. He has been officially accused of membership of the banned Muslim Brotherhood, but his detention appears most likely linked to articles and photos he has posted online and at his work exposing torture committed by the security services.

REPORTERS SANS FRONTIÈRES LANCE UNE PETITION EN FAVEUR DES BLOGUEURS KAREEM AMER ET ABDUL-MONEIM MAHMOUD

Le texte de la pétition :

"Nous demandons la libération d'Abdel Kareem Nabil Suleiman (Kareem Amer) et d'Abdul-Moneim Mahmoud, emprisonnés pour avoir exprimé leurs opinions sur Internet. Nous appelons les organisateurs du Forum sur la gouvernance d'Internet à intervenir en faveur de ces deux blogueurs auprès des autorités égyptiennes. Il serait inacceptable qu'un sommet onusien sur l'avenir d'Internet se tienne dans un pays qui emprisonne des blogueurs."

Cette pétition sera envoyée, le 6 novembre 2007, soit un an après l'arrestation de Kareem Amer, au président égyptien Hosni Moubarak, au coordinateur exécutif de l'IGF, Markus Kummer, ainsi qu'au secrétaire général des Nations unies, Ban Ki-moon.

Kareem Amer
Abdel Kareem Nabil Suleiman, plus connu sous le nom de plume Kareem Amer, a été arrêté, le 6 novembre 2006, pour des articles publiés sur son blog (www.karam903.blogspot.com). Il dénonçait régulièrement les dérives autoritaires du gouvernement de Hosni Moubarak et critiquait les plus hautes institutions religieuses du pays, en particulier l'université sunnite Al-Azhar, dans laquelle il étudiait le droit. Le blogueur a été condamné, le 22 février 2007, à trois ans de prison pour avoir "incité à la haine de l'islam" et à un an pour avoir "insulté" le président égyptien. La sentence a été confirmée en appel le 12 mars.

Abdul-Moneim Mahmoud
Abdul-Moneim Mahmoud, responsable du blog Ana Ikhwan (www.ana-ikhwan.blogspot.com), a été arrêté le 14 avril 2007. Il est officiellement accusé d'appartenance à une "organisation illégale", les Frères musulmans, mais sa détention semble en réalité liée aux textes et photos qu'il publie en ligne et à son travail de dénonciation des tortures commises par les services de sécurité.

REPORTEROS SIN FRONTERAS PONE EN MARCHA UNA PETICIÓN EN FAVOR DE LOS BLOGGERS "KAREEM AMER" Y ABDUL-MONEIM MAHMOUD

Cuando se cumplen seis meses de la detención de "Kareem Amer", Reporteros sin Fronteras pone en marcha una petición para pedir la libertad de este blogger y de su colega, Abdul-Moneim Mahmoud. En el texto, la organización pide a los responsables del Forum sobre el Gobierno de Internet (IGF), conferencia organizada bajo el patrocinio de la ONU, que se niegue a que Egipto sea el anfitrión de ese acontecimiento en 2008, si no pone en libertad a los dos bloggers.

"Kareem Amer"
Abdel Kareem Nabil Suleiman, más conocido por el pseudónimo "Kareem Amer", fue detenido el 6 de noviembre de 2006 por unos artículos publicados en su blog (www.karam903.blogspot.com). Denunciaba frecuentemente las derivas autoritarias del gobierno de Hosni Mubarak y criticaba a las más altas instituciones religiosas del país, y en particular a la universidad sunnita Al-Azhar, en la que estudiaba derecho. El 22 de febrero de 2007 condenaron al blogger a tres años de cárcel por "incitar al odio del Islam", y a un año por "insultar" al presidente egipcio. La sentencia se confirmó en apelación el 12 de marzo.

Abdul-Moneim Mahmoud
Abdul-Moneim Mahmoud, responsable del blog Ana Ikhwan (

www.ana-ikhwan.blogspot.com), fue detenido el 14 de abril de 2007. Está oficialmente acusado de pertenencia a una "organización ilegal", los Hermanos Musulmanes, aunque parece que en realidad su detención está relacionada con los textos y fotos que ha publicado en línea, y con su trabajo de denuncia de las torturas cometidas por los servicios de seguridad.
