CALL FOR PROPOSALS: TEACHING WORKSHOP

The Canadian Committee for Education in Journalism (CCEJ) is coordinating a teaching workshop to be offered for journalism educators from around the world on Tuesday 26 June, 2007, in Singapore, as part of the World Journalism Education Congress. We invite teachers of journalism at post-secondary level in any country to propose presentations or hands-on teaching sessions to be presented as part of this three-hour workshop.

The overall topic of the workshop is:

Teaching journalists in an age of ambiguity

Nothing is certain about journalism anymore. "Information" is easier to get than ever, but there's never been a greater need for assurance on accuracy in the news. Instead, the very meaning of “news” -- as opposed to opinion, interpretation, and even satire -- is the subject of growing uncertainty. Against this backdrop, how do today's journalism instructors around the world motivate and guide students who sometimes seem progressively less aware of current events, less willing to read, and less adept at critical thinking and research?

Within this overall framework, we will be happy to consider any proposals that will present, demonstrate or apply educators’ ideas for and practice in responding to the current needs of journalism students. While all proposals will be welcomed, we are especially interested in presentations of innovative teaching approaches, and hope that presentations will include a high degree of interactivity that allow the journalism teachers present from around the world to share their insights and experience, whether in small or larger groups. Please send your brief proposal (250 to 500 words) to Ivor Shapiro, Associate Professor, School of Journalism, Ryerson University, Toronto, Canada. Email: ishapiro@ryerson.ca. Other members of the planning group include Stephen J.A. Ward, Acting Director, School of Journalism, University of British Columbia, and Kim Kierans, Director, School of Journalism, University of King’s College.

The deadline for proposals is Wednesday, January 24th, 2007. We will respond to all proposals by mid-February, 2007.
